August Community Conversations
Thank you to everyone who stopped by Rotary Park yesterday. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from neighbors about what's working, what's not, and where you'd like to see legislative attention. Several conversations centered around renters' rights, gun safety, and transportation, so I wanted to share a few resources that may be helpful for these issues at the top of our minds.
Renters' Rights
If you're a renter—or know someone who is—a great resource is CVOEO https://www.cvoeo.org/get-help/vermont-tenants-rights-and-resources . Their website provides clear, plain-language information about leases, security deposits, repairs, landlord entry, rent increases, evictions, subsidized housing, and many other topics. Eligible residents can also request free civil legal assistance from Vermont Legal Aid at https://vtlawhelp.org/landlord-tenant-renter
Gun Safety
Several people asked about Vermont's recent firearm safety legislation. I noted that this session, we worked on legislation (H.606) that strengthens public safety while recognizing the constitutional rights of responsible gun owners.
Among other things, the new law:
Improves procedures for safely relinquishing firearms when someone is legally prohibited from possessing them under a court order.
Establishes clearer statewide standards for secure storage and return of relinquished firearms.
Creates a more consistent process for law enforcement and federally licensed firearms dealers who assist with firearm storage.
Improves victim notification and accountability throughout the process.
The legislation was carefully crafted to address specific public safety concerns without broadly restricting lawful firearm ownership. It builds on existing federal law and focuses on keeping firearms out of the hands of individuals whom a court has determined pose a danger to themselves or others.

Transportation & Green Mountain Transit
Many folks shared concerns about proposed service reductions and the importance of maintaining reliable, affordable public transportation for Winooski residents, including workers, older adults, students, families, and newcomers to our community.

I strongly encourage anyone who relies on Green Mountain Transit—or whose family, workplace, or community would be affected—to participate in the public process. Public input truly matters.
